Castro Marim to Host its First 4-Star Hotel

25 March 2018

The village of Castro Marim, in the eastern Algarve near the border with Spain, will have a four-star hotel in a total investment of 2.5 million euros. The new hotel is expected to begin operations in 2020 and is under development by N&L Hotels, the company that owns the Hotel Apolo in the nearby Vila Real de Santo António.

According to Nuno Vasques, general manager of the Hotel Apolo, in statements to the online newspaper ‘Sul Informação’, the future hotel will have “44 large rooms, each with an area of 25 square meters,” entirely facing the wetlands and the Guadiana river. One of its main attractions will be its link with the “authenticity of Castro Marim,” taking advantage of the fact that the village has a rich history and is surrounded by a protected nature reserve which is full of riches, easily accessible on foot or bicycle.

The village of Castro Marim, the seat of the municipality of the same name, has a well-known sea-front, but so far, no hotel.

The future 4-star establishment will be built on a plot of land situated on the edge of the village of Castro Marim, next to the Sapal Nature Reserve, one of the seven protected wetlands in Portugal. The investment follows a public tender that had been launched by the municipality of Castro Marim in 2017, which offered the use of a plot of land next to an existing playground for the construction of a hotel.

According to the Algarve’s advisory body, “at this moment, though the idea for the future hotel is well defined, there is still no architectural project to show, considering that the licensing phase is in progress.” No name has been chosen yet for the new venture.
