80 Hotels Under Construction Are Slated to Open in the Next Two Years

14 November 2017

80 new hotels are under construction in Portugal. These figures were unveiled by the Economy Minister Manuel Caldeira Cabral, who foresees that the hotels will open within the next two years.

The Minister, speaking to a joint parliamentary committee on Budget, Finance and Administrative Modernization and Economy, Innovation and Public Works, in the context of discussions on the proposed State Budget for 2018 (OE2018), added that the credit lines for financing tourism projects also permitted upgrades to roughly 200 hotels, Lusa reported.

Regarding local tourist accommodations, and in response to Members’ questions, Caldeira Cabral stated that when the current Portuguese government took office, there were only 28,000 registered homes in the sector. That number has now almost doubled, reaching 52,000. However, the official rejected the idea of a reduction in the number of such units.

The minister also spoke of a 50-million-euro fund for capturing footage and supporting events in Portugal, noting that the subsidies to events that take place in the country lead to spending both in hotels and restaurants, but in other sectors as well. “These events promote tourism activity and employment” and also allow “significant tax receipts,” he said.
