Uniplaces Says Student Rents Increased by 4% in the First Semester of 2018

Rents for student accommodations rose by an average of 17 euros in the first half of 2018 (+4%), as Lisbon maintained its position as the most expensive city in Portugal for students, with an average rent of 485 euros/month, up by 26 euros since the same period in 2017.

According to Uniplaces, an online platform for student accommodations, the number of international students renting a home or room through the platform in Portugal also increased, with more than 88% of the reservations made by international students. Compared to the same period in 2017, the number of international students renting through Uniplaces increased by 8% in Portugal. The number of reservations in the city of Lisbon also increased by about 10% in the first half of 2018.

The platform also noted that student rents average 407 euros in Porto, representing a rise of 24 euros compared to the first half of 2017. As in Lisbon, reservations made on the platform during the first half of the year in the city of Porto increased by more than 10% over the last year in Porto.

Coimbra, among Portugal’s three main university cities, remains the least expensive for students in the first half of 2018. The average monthly rent during the first half of 2018 stood at 291 euros, down slightly (-€2) compared to the same period of 2017. Studying in Coimbra costs, on average, 194 euros less per month than studying in Lisbon and, on average, 116 euros less than studying in the city of Porto.

Giovanni Lavra, Uniplaces’ Country Manager in Portugal, stated that “the number of non-resident students continues to increase in Portugal, making continued investments in student housing all the more important, creating an expanded market, with increased options and more diversified housing for students looking for a home or room to rent.”
