Rehabilitation of Monte Gordo Waterfront Begins

6 December 2017

The Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) began the reconstruction of Monte Gordo’s beach periphery. The intervention is valued at 1.8 million euros and is aimed at redesigning and upgrading the leisure areas of the county’s leading seaside resort.

Developed together with the construction of the Monte Gordo Walkway – which is now in phase II, with the construction of new beach facilities – these two works will lead to the revitalisation of the entire Monte Gordo Maritime Front. The aim is to boost tourism by upgrading and organising the public area.

The construction will provide Monte Gordo with new investment opportunities in a previously unused area, allowing, at the same time, compliance with regulations and current urban planning.

The project will focus on four specific areas of the waterfront: the gardens (nascent group), casino square (central), playground (west) and the boardwalk, along which kiosks, terraces and shading structures will be placed.

In parallel, some of the surrounding streets will be resurfaced, resting areas and circulation zones will be created with comfort in mind, and new areas will be developed for the food and beverages that are commonly associated with the beach economy.

Conceição Cabrita, mayor of VRSA, stated that “these measures aim at a general and careful renovation of the public space on the Monte Gordo waterfront, bringing new equipment capable of making this area more dynamic during the daytime and nighttime and creating new leisure areas, restaurants and stores.

The works should be completed by the end of May 2018, and an overall investment of around €12 million (public and private investment) is expected.

The construction of the 18 new beach facilities, whose structures will be uniform, at the same level of the walkway, will begin in January of 2018.
