€3 Million Investment in the Renovation of Mealhada’s Historic Centre

9 January 2018

The Mealhada City Council approved today two preliminary projects aimed at the renovation of the city’s historic centre in an investment of three million euros, which results from its application for funds from the Portugal 2020 program’s Urban Regeneration Action Plan.

The works will transform the central core of the city of Mealhada, benefiting several existing buildings in the city centre, including the City Hall, Municipal Library and the CP Station.

One of the preliminary projects under the Urban Regeneration Action Plan (PARU) is the “Redevelopment of Empty Urban Space into Parking” project, in the intersection of the Avenida Manuel Lousada, Rua Branquinho de Carvalho, Rua das Oliveiras and Rua 27 de Setembro.

The new car park will be located next to Mealhada’s principal commercial hub, providing enough parking to absorb future losses to the other PARU interventions, facilitating parking in the city centre.

The works will take place on a strip of land located at the beginning of the Northern Line, adjacent to Mealhada’s historic centre.

“This long-desired intervention will permit a significant improvement in road and pedestrian traffic, as well as creating a car park in the historic centre of the city,” the municipality chaired by Rui Marqueiro stated.

The second action under the PARU will be the “urban renewal of the historic center,” which will be completed in two phases: one covering the streets Visconde Valdoeiro and Cerveira Lebre (with the creation of pedestrian spaces, parking areas and improved access to the Mealhada School Center) and another covering the streets Capitão Cabral and Dr Luís Navega (from the Cineteatro rotunda to the CP Station).
