Reggio Emilia, cut by the City Council on new shopping centres

21 December, Gazzetta di Reggio

With the only exception of the Conad store in Via Luxemburg, the City of Reggio Emilia continues its program to stop new openings of shopping centres in the old town. With this purpose, the planning committee (participated by various bodies operating in the environment and health sectors) has approved the variation to the urban plan for cancelling over 46 thousand Sq m, equal to 18 new hypermarkets.

Moreover, the variation excludes the opening of shopping arcades in the old town and new commercial constructions will be carried out only if considered sustainable, meaning only if they’ll be able to serve the increased population and to favour the growth of small businesses in the old town.

The variation was implemented by the City administration in order to support the old town “as the only natural shopping centre of the city”. In conclusion, the provision “will further strengthen the strategies of urban regeneration together with the previous variation implying the reduction of a developable area by over 2 million Sq m, equal to 1,130 new apartments”, comments the City Councillor for Urban Regeneration Alex Pratissoli.
