Projects in Rome: the city administration should take an action

21 September, Corriere della Sera

Less than one year ago, La Sapienza University announced its contribution in the requalification of the San Lorenzo neighbourhood with a linguistic department, a functional and colourful building located between the Verano cemetery and the train station. Now, Roma Tre has announced that it will open in two years the new rectorate and offices along Via Ostiense, near the museum Centrale Montemartini. The youngest state university in Rome with 35 thousand students is growing and expanding. The project is signed by the Italian architect Mario Cucinella, who previously worked with Renzo Piano. The total cost of the project amounts to about forty million. The Ostiense-Marconi area is trying to recover after the disappointment for the plans of the city administration which had never been implemented. But a new district (including houses and services) will rise soon on the Tevere riverside, while the old Mattatoio and Mercati Generali have given up all hopes for a future. In the same area, the former Rome trade fair lies like a wreck on Via Cristoforo Colombo.

The university is recovering with significant architectural project areas that are as densely populated as neglected. What about the city administration? Perhaps, the initial plans were too ambitious and not realistic concerning the available means. Anyway, the city administration must not give up its role of contributor in the renovation of the city.
