Volkswagen invests on Greek island to turn it Green

Astypalea island is transforming into a miniature of the future energy system of Greece. Volkswagen has announced that it will turn Astypalea into a Green Island by investing in the energy autonomy of the island, based on Renewable Sources.

The “Smart & Sustainable Island” investment was presented at an event in the presence of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Regarding the electrical system of the island, the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) has already completed a study to achieve a RES rate above 60%: a hybrid system that combines RES production – wind and solar – with energy storage in batteries.

The study is being updated in light of the new energy needs for charging electric vehicles as well as developments in installation and equipment costs and is expected to be ready next month. This increases the energy needs by only 15% on an annual basis. The results of the updated study will be used to determine the characteristics of the hybrid system that will be developed on the island, in terms of its size, technology and cost.

The next step is a ministerial decision that will describe the licensing framework of the hybrid system and the conduct of a tender by the Energy Regulatory Authority for the selection of the project contractor.

Green energy production and storage will be combined with smart charging technologies to manage the extra demand generated by electric vehicles. This will ensure that charging does not take place during hours of high energy demand, nor at the same time for all vehicles but will coincide with the hours when there is high production from wind and / or solar panels.
