Microsoft to invest in solar panels to cover energy needs of data centers

Microsoft’s three data centers in Attica will cover their huge energy needs almost exclusively by solar panels. This will open in Greece the market of large-scale self-generated energy with solar panels.

Each of the properties identified by Microsoft is 80 to 100 thousand sqm. They will have a distance between them of 15 km for safety reasons and will be connected by fiber. The panels will be installed on the roofs of all three facilities and on the ground.

Data centers are very energy consuming. It is estimated that they consume 1% of the total energy demand worldwide. The cooling of the server rooms can in many cases represent up to 60% of the total energy cost. In the case of Microsoft and the investment in Attica, several megawatts of self-generating solar panels will be needed.

Today, the vast majority of self-produced energy projects in Greece are small. Although the framework has been in place since 2016, few companies have used it. Therefore, when Microsoft solar panels are put into operation, they will be by far the largest self-generation system in the Greek market.
